Question and Answer
What are the PCI requirements for my fuel site?
PCI EPP standards require that fuel dispenser payment devices use the Triple Data Encryption Standard (TDES) algorithm to encrypt PIN data multiple times in the keypad. Devices must also include tamper-responsive security components and data skimming resistance.
To whom does PCI apply?
PCI applies to ALL organizations or merchants, regardless of size or number of transactions, that accepts, transmits or stores any cardholder data. Said another way, if any customer of that organization ever pays the merchant directly using a credit card or debit card, then the PCI DSS requirements apply
Compliance Deadlines
January 2009 - New dispensers in the US must be TDES-capable and have PCI certified encrypted PIN pads.
July 1, 2010 - All dispensers globally, including legacy equipment, must actively use TDES encryption and be PCI certified.
